Current work / Work Up Close
Learning how owner-led companies really operate.
Work Up Close is independent research into operational work that is difficult to see from outside: the documents, rules, exceptions, handoffs, and judgment that connect a request to a dependable result.
The question
Where does routine work remain fragile or expensive?
I am looking for recurring work that depends too heavily on memory, informal knowledge, duplicate entry, or the owner noticing every exception personally.
That includes missed inquiries and follow-ups, incomplete handoffs, preventable corrections, rework, delays, and expensive people spending time on avoidable coordination.
Method
Conversation first. Evidence before a solution.
- 01
Speak with an owner or experienced manager about one process they know deeply.
- 02
With permission, reconstruct the workflow from a small set of examples, records, or communications.
- 03
Identify a narrow point of leakage, delay, or operational dependence that can be measured.
- 04
If the evidence supports it, test the smallest useful change while people retain judgment.
I do not begin by asking for broad access to company systems or by proposing continuous monitoring of communications. The scope expands only when there is a clear reason and explicit permission.
Longer-term direction
Make the business more resilient when the owner steps back.
The aim is to make routine work visible, monitor outcomes, evaluate exceptions, improve the process, and automate only what has become stable. A stronger company should preserve its standards without requiring the founder’s attention at every step.
